merc 1 stalls going into reverse

I have a 78 slickcraft with a 350 and a merc 1 outdrive my latest problem is that when i try to put it in reverse the boat stalls. it goes into foward just fine. i have read the manuals from up top but i dont kow what/how to trouble shoot this problem. What i have found is that if i move the throttle backwards (not in grear mood) the engine will not chang speed untill the leaver is atleast half way down. it is not that way in foward throttle works as it should. idk if this is a cause or not. the throttle disconect looks good it comes out of gear as it should so idk what els to look for. sorry this got a bit long i would like to fix this as spining the boat abround at the dock is getting old.

i think the most common answer to yer problem is the lower shift cable needs to be replaced. has it ever been replaced?

I had the same problem when I bought my boat. I will try to check with the guy who fixed it for me to see what it was.

Lower shift cable is bad. If it hasn't been updated, you'll have to use a new style cable, which means you'll have to pull the bellhousing and tap through the mounting hole. The old cable screws in from the front (transom) side, the new cable from the rear.
Replace the shift shaft bushings too. The new style upper seals out water better; water in the shift cavity gets into the cable sheath and kills the cable.

yeah i was afraid that wa going to be the problem. i dont know if or when the cable was replaced. so they dont make the old style cables any more? when u said "tap" it out do you mean put new treads in the housing?

Ayuh,... You got it,... With a Special tap....
