I believe the shift shaft is leaking. Any advice on removing the shift shaft seal? The manual references a special tool. Is there something else I can use, or a way of fabricating a tool? also, how could I fabricate a tool to remove the prop shaft (to replace seals)? Once again the manual references a special tool. Also, is there anything else I need to be wary of when replacing the seals? The motor is a 1963 Merc 1000.

Thanks for your assistance.

When you change out your L/U oil, does it seem milky, like theres a water leak present? If so, I would suggest getting a pro. technician rebuild that L/U, unless your feeling froggy.
Tell you what, email me at www.greasemonkeyozi.com. I know I can get your problem fixed.

bh357: I made a wrench for the bushing by doctoring the end of a piece of black iron pipe. The prop shaft assembly retainer can be removed using a big, husky spanner wrench- I made one of these too.
PMS in FL also has these-- about $100 for both. (727)442-4025.

Re: Merc 1000 l/u seal removal?

When I drained the l/u lube, it was milky colored. When I got the motor it was leaking lube out of a drain hole at the top front of the "bullet", which I later found (after removal) is right in the vicinity of the shift shaft. I do want to do the work myself, and intend on replacing all the seals for good measure. Are the driveshaft seals the ones at the top and bottom of the water pump only, or are there any others? When I removed the lower part of the water pump assembly, I exposed the driveshaft bearings, so I don't believe there are any other seals.
There didn't appear to be any metallic material in the lube when I drained it, or any metal on the drain plug.
I will attempt the iron pipe method for the shift shaft removal. Still looking for ideas for the propshaft. NEECAPRS, could you please describe the tool you made to remove the prop shaft retainer?

Thanks,
Brad
