The water pipe needs to be sealed at the top. If it is not sealed the result is overheating due to no water flow.

You will have to remove the powerhead and replace the grommet.

TMD

Did you install your impeller backwards?
Another senario is that a small piece of impeller could have broke off in the past clogging a hose or something. Good luck.

I HAVE A 1970 MERC 9.8.WENT THROUGH ALL THE BULL WITH THE IMPELLAR.THE BEST THING TO DO WITH THE OLD MERCS IS TO ORDER A NEW WATER PUMP STILL AVALABLE FROM MERC,AROUND $68 GOT IT IN 3 DAYS THROUGH MERC PARTS EXPRESS.IT HAS ALL THE SEALS AND NWE IMPELLAR WITH IT.IT IT IMPORTANT TO REPLACE THE SEALS ,TO KEEP WATER OUT OF THE LOWER UNIT.ALSO I WAS LOOSING WATER PRESSURE THROUGH THE SEAL ON THE MAIN SHAFT.SINCE I REPLACED THE PUMP NO WATER GETTING IN LOWER UNIT.BE SURE AND CHECK FOR BLOCKAGE IN THE COOLING SYSTEM BEFORE YOU BOLT IT BACK TOGETHER AND DON'T FORGET TO PRE LUBE THE IMPELLAR.
