newby here. I just bought a Mercury 110, 9.8hp. Very clean. Engine runs great, but no water is coming out of the tell tale. I removed the lower unit to check for an obstruction, to my dismay, upon replacement, I only have forward gear. Reverse and neutral are gone! I'd say the motor is early 70's or so, i haven't determined that yet. What could've went wrong? It still doesn't pump water, so I made my problem even worse now. Where should I start looking? What happened to the other gears?

Hi.

Here's a good starting point

You obviously need a new impeller (key word for searching on these forums). Once you replace it you have to reassemble the lower unit correctly (get a manual, link bottom this page) and your gears most likely will work again.

Thanks UU, I had figured that out not long after posting this message. Sorry to waste your time. I searched everywhere i could think of, then one phone call to an oldtimer chaged everything. Suppose replacing the impeller doesn't help my problem, then what would I do? Do you know how to realine the shift linkage correctly?
