merc 115...?clams or anyone. whats the difference

so I have a boat rated for 120hp and my 82 merc 90 melted a piston last season. now I want to get a 115 (having a hard time locating one) and keep the 90 for parts. <br /><br /> Clams. Why when you talk about these motors do you say the 85-88 115s are the best? Whats different about say an 83 and an 85?

The 85-88's had the new style power-trim that will bolt up to the modern transom without a re-drill.<br /><br />Any 115 after 1982 is the same power-wise, only difference in the trim setup.<br /><br />-W

jrboater,<br />i have an alumacraft that is rated for a 140. it came with an 04 merc 90 2stroke. i wanted to upgrade to a 115. dealer said the only difference between the 90 and 115 was about 2 grand. the 115 would only give me about 2-3 mph more. you may want to check for a 90

Teamstromer, that bad info someone gave you the engines port timing is differant on the two engines, a 90hp strains for RPM after about 4800 to 5000RPM and a 115 keeps right on trucking--Bob

laddiesservice,<br />dealer meant $2000.00 difference. my 90 purrs at 5000 rpm. alumacraft 175 navigator cs weighs in at 1200 lbs and with 3 fishermen and 20 gal of fuel, sails along on plane at comfortable 42 mph. guess i'm saying i am pleased with the 90 merc.

Ok, I was stuck on the first post of jrboater and didn't catch that Teamstormer was talking about the new engines, if you like a 3cyl 90 you would have to love one of the I/line 6s but they cost Mercury to much to build, besides they remind the board of Carl and Charlie Strang---Bob

I had an 88 115 i6 merc... It was a very powerful motor and seemed to be quicker and faster than the 115 v4 evinrude I replaced it with.<br />The motor never gave me a problem until someone tried to steel it on my mooring. After that it was all down hill !<br />The trim on that motor was much better than the older style.<br />The only down side I can see to any i6 is that they are more difficult to work on.

I liked the 90 just fine, it pushed my little glastron at 45 with just me but like I said it melted a piston and if a lot of the ignition parts are interchangeable....<br /> <br /> ?? The 90 had the inboard trim pump, will the newer style trim tilt affect mounting holes? or can I just bolt it on?

It will affect holes. You can hammer a wooden dowell into the old holes and seal the outsides with 3M 5200.<br /><br /><br />-W

Would you recomend getting the newer t/t setup and patching or just going with the older setup to avoid transom mods?
