1987 Mercury 115 in line 6 power trim motor will run but cylinder does not move. I checked and it has fluid. Is there any other test to do to find the problem. Thanks

I'm having the same problem with my 115. It's a 93 Mercury. Had a guy put a kit on it and it still doesn't work. He wasn't confident in his abilities. Did you find your answer or if someone could help give me the information I need I would be most greatful. The trim motor runs great.

Sounds like air in the system. Did you bleed the air? On the single piston system (type 2 I think) you have to open the resevoir after running to expell the air, then check that the oil (tranny fluid) is up to the threads of the fill. Tighten the fill plug and do again.

Re: Merc 115 Power Trim - Motor runs but cylinder does not move

Hi,i am having the same problems with my merc 115 power trim, spent hours trying to get the air out because mine was the same as whats been stated.must admit its getting better each day but going to tottaly drain all the old oil out and add new. Now to bleed the system you have to keep working the engine up and down but can only do this with the manual releif valve open!!is this letting air in each time??? to me all these problems are air in the system as seen mine lift all the up fine but wont come down even working off direct to a battery. PLease please someone help us!!!!

Re: Merc 115 Power Trim - Motor runs but cylinder does not move

Hope this helps - I fix tons of trims and it pretty much boils down to this short list.

Low on Fluid:
The system raises halfway and does not go any further. The motor continues to run until you release the switch. Your engine does not bleed down.

Bad relays or switch wiring:
The system has intermittent problems or works in only one direction.

Bad motor:
Nothing happens. You check voltage to motor and read 12V. Still, nothing happens.

Broken or worn out pump valves:
The system raises and slowly sinks back down.

Air in fluid:
everything works perfectly. When tilted you can bounce the engine just a little by hand but it doesn't really change position.

Internal Deterioration or rubber:
System sinks down as fast as motor can lift it. If you pull up on prop you can tell that it is trying to go up.

Broken release valve:
motor runs but nothing happens. Typically the system must be disassembled in order to remove the debris.

You could have bad seals on your cylinders. If it causes a problem then you need to fix it, if it is a little annoying then you can live with it.
