Merc 1150 lower unit

I have a Mercury 1150 that chatters when I try to put it in reverse. It goes into forward fine. The local shop says they need to rebuild the lower unit for about $800.00. They said it could be cheaper to find a used lower unit in good condition. If I go that route, what various models and modelyears will fit the Merc 1150?

Howdy Ken, What year Merc 1150 do you have? I have a 77 that I fried the pistons on and selling motor as parts. The lower unit mechanically is fine but the water pump needs to be rebuilt. I'd also recommend replacing the gaskets at this stage. Email me at Liemavick@excite.com if your interested.
