merc 1150 ... run with cyl cover off...

hello<br />1976 mercury 1150 I6 115hp tower of power!<br /><br />was having some overheating issues recently, as smome of you know, and found sand in the motor under the cyl cover, i have cleaned it all out as much as i can tell....<br /><br />i want to start the motor with the cyl cover off to see how the water flow has improved at all .... i only plan to do it for a short time, and i have a temp guage installed to watch it.... do you tink i can get away with this "crazy" idea?

It might be a better idea to, with the lower unit off, just hook a water supply to the water tube. That way you'll have more controlled conditions in which to check your water flow. You could even run the water for an extended amount of time without harming anything, to help flush the motor out of any residual debris.<br /><br />Don't think it would run real good with the exh. cover off, plus with all that water spraying around it could suck it back in to the cyls.<br /><br />Just a thought...........ed
