purchased this "70 1150 about 3 mo. back. it is
the cleanest 30yr old motor I have ever seen!
it is completely origional all the way down to
plug wires.
ran her for maybe 10-20hrs. so far, mostly
conservativly. starts,runs,idles good...no miss.
rectifier is bad (thanks JB) so don't know rpms,
but she has a problem with torque in the water.
it had the worst smellin' foul fuel you could find,
fist step new tank and sending unit, then impeller
now the country outboard doc. (only 1 around for 1hr)
has an unexpected lull and I jump at the opening.
he will get to her as soon as he fixes the little
sailboat OB that fell off when trailering :p
now i'm rambling.... if you were me, what would
be your wishlist of maintainence in the order you
think most important?
so far: rectifier, carbs/pumps rbld., igntn. ck,
compression,..... what else?
i'm not rich, but got a good deal on the boat/motor,
so I have a few bucks to give her some tlc right now. otherwise, it will be left up to me and he's
got 25yrs experience and I'm still trying to figure out the dang seloc manual....
as always, thanks in advance :)

Re: merc 1150 wish list

Since you already got a new impeller first thing is new oil in the lower unit. Then a new rectifier and spark plugs.

If it ain't broken - don't fix it.

Look for cracks in the fuel line and bulb (or was that included in the new/used fuel tank). Check all rubber hoses.
Make sure there is no overheating problems.
Check rpm @ wot as soon as possible (rectifier).

hey i got the same motor about 2 months ago, it runs very good but recently lost some power. my first trip out it was up to 42 mph at 5500rpms and sow im at 35-37 mph at 5000rpms. maybe thier just old? other than loss of power its a good ole motor.

Re: merc 1150 wish list

hi Eric and welcome aboard!
my 1150 is in the shop having the fuel system
rebuilt (carbs and pumps). previous owner left
fuel in system for 5-6 yrs... bad! will let you
know how it turns out. my rectifier is bad so
can't tell you RPM's, but she wasn't going much
faster the 25-30mph. should push my 16' open bow
about 50 :D they are great old motors, commonly
called the "tower of power".
good luck and have fun....
M.Y.
