hey all,
I rebuilt the carbs got them adjusted and took the boat out 2 weeks ago and the motor ran great out on a river. decided to take the boat out to the gulf and it wouldn't get up above 20k RPM's.

I'm stumped as to the problem. Any insight for the direction I should look would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

I presume you mean 2000RPM. What year is the motor? If it has the 6 coil ignition system, you caould have a bad high speed winding on the stator. it could also be dirt in the carbs.

Have you checked the throttle linkage to make sure carbs open, and trigger or distributor move?

yes 2000 sorry. The motor is a '75 inline 6 with the CD ignition with dist.
Now when you say high speed winding do you mean that as a noise or is it actually the part name? Sorry I'm new to boat motors and just starting to learn the in's and out's of them. :)
thanks again

Re: merc. 1150 ?

Distributor motors do not have high speed stators, so that is not the issue. First make sure the carbs open nearly all the way at max throttle, engine off. The distributor should hit the max timing stop. If that is OK, Check the compression. Also inspect all the spark plugs for color. Report if any look real clean, real dirty or just different from the others. Run the motor om muffs and listen for arcing from plug wires to ground.

Let us know what you find....

Turns out it was one of 2 things first changed the fuel pump then discovered the middle carb. had a lodged float. replaced both and its ran fine since. I believe it was the lodged float that was the culprit.
thanks again all
