Having trouble with the starter motor on my 115 merc. On a fully charged battery the starter starts off very slow, then it gets faster but then by then it's drained the battery. Is it time to change the starter or should i change the bushes. Also what starter should i be looking for the serial no of my engine is 6480398, any help would be appreciated as i'm getting wildly contadicting and not to say inflated quotes from local marine service shops on the work to repair.

Re: Merc 115hp 1984 Starter motor problems

Ahoy, Dad.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Using jumper cables, jump a fully charged battery to the starter: Ground (-) connects to engine block, Hot (+) connects to the large lug on the starter motor.

If she spins up full speed your starter motor is okay and you have need to remove and clean all cable connections from your boat battery to the engine.

If the motor still lags, put some new brushes in her.

Good luck. :)
