My trim pump just stopped working on my 1980 four winns with a merc 120 i/o. Yes it has power, fluid is full, solenoids (2)are new and are clicking, but no movement. Oh and yes the leads to the limit and sender switches are shot. How do I test the pump? can I hot wire pump to see if it works?

Welcome to iboats.

Sounds like the trim motor brushes are stuck. Can you get it to run if you tap on the trim motor?

Re: merc 120 trim pump testing?

I just got done working on my unit. If it is the oildyne style there are 3 wires coming out of the motor - green, blue, black. The black is ground, the blue is up, the green is down. I think of blue up in sky, green grass down on ground. I jumped from the 12v battery to either the blue or green and the black ground to test the motor. In my case the motor quit. I took it off the pump opened it to find my magnets had worn out. Replaced the magnets, works like a charm. Disclaimer - this is what I did but I am not an expert in boat electrical units. Good Luck.
