I am replacing the camshaft on my merc 140 hp.(Long story) I bought a used camshaft that looks fairly clean. Two questions:
1) What kind of lube would you recommend coating it with for reinstall?
2) Would you recommend trying to buff off the little bit of rust scale with steel wool? Something else? Not at all?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Re: Merc 140 hp camshaft replacement help

Having done numerous cams in cars I recommend normal (non-synthetic!!!) motor oil or a 50/50 mix of motor oil and moly paste.

Cam has rust on it? Was it sitting outside of a motor for a very long time? If so, I'm not sure I'd use it at all since you want the surfaces to be 100% smooth... You could get them that way by machining them, but mehhhhh it might be out of balance then... Not as big of a deal as a crank being out of balance, but still going to cause extra wear either way...

Why go through the trouble of installing a rusty cam only to screw up lifters which will be screwed even worse than they are by running previous worn onto a totally different wear pattern on the cam. Old cam, new lifters! Old lifters on the same cam! New lifters on a new cam then broken in properly.

Re: Merc 140 hp- new lifter source

Re: Merc 140 hp- new lifter source

Thanks for all the feedback on the camshaft replacement. Suffice to say I am trying to cut corners due to budget constraints and the fact that the entire boat is getting old and in need of more work than I can do at the moment. I am replacing all gaskets, swapping a head, replacing water pump, etc.

I do hear you loud and clear that I need to get new lifters which I can cover. I called 3 local shops and none of them had them in stock. My Merc 140 engine serial number is 4650426 and I believe my OEM replacement part is 72638 ? LIFTER, HYDRAULIC - TAPPET. Is there anyway to cross reference this to an automotive part and would that be easier to find. Is that a bad idea?

Should I just call and eat the expidited freight charges.
