I am a newbie so bear with me all help is greatly appreciated. My merc 140 Wont start without a little gas or starter fluid in the carb. Also when running with the garden hose hooked up i get what looks like smoke out of the propellar. Also there seems like the propellar isnt on the drive shaft or splines are worn out because there is a slight clicking when give it a little gas. Thanks for the help

Will it run on its own after you prime the carb?

Re: Merc 140 Problems

Sounds like your boat needs lots of work.
First is an accelerator pump in the carb. It will pump gas into the carb for priming when starting.
Second, the exhaust comes out the prop on Merc drives. Water is coming out of the drive or at the base of the transom shield or you need an impeller.
Third, shift cable adjustment is a little off allowing the dogs on the dog clutch to touch when in neutral.

Fish, sometimes how a question is worded can lead to different answers. The above advice is excellent. Just to make sure we all understand what exactly is happening with your boat : 1) When you say that it will not start without adding gas or starter fluid.....are you aware that most boats with carbs require you to "pump the throttle" a time or two, then set the throttle a bit above idle before cranking (very different from a modern car)? Your question about the prop "clicking" when giving it gas.....is this in the driveway, out of the water ? In neutral or in gear ? If in the driveway, in gear, is this WHEN you give it gas...or when you LET OFF the gas ? For instance, if you rev up a boat, out of the water in gear, as soon as you let off of the gas the prop is still spinning faster than the drive gears....it will click....that is normal. Just trying to get a clear picture of what is happening.

Re: Merc 140 Problems

Fish, there should be somekind of button on the throttle lever that you can pull out or depress, sometimes the whole lever pulls out. This will allow you to start motor without it being in gear. Like water one says give a couple puumps of gas in neutral, leave throttle open about 20% and see if it will start. The smoke from the propeller is where the exhaust exits and if you were too rich from the starting fluid or fuel you will get some extra smoke.

Thanks for all the info guys sorry about the wording on the first post was a little distressed from working on the boat all day with no progress. I am going out today to check the carb and will keep you posted. I also have one more question. Where is the lube fill bolt on the stern drive unit on my merc. I will keep you posted on progress.

Standing at the back of the boat there should be a flat head screw on the bottom left and at the top left. Fill it from the bottom up

Re: Merc 140 Problems

after running my engine hooked up with a garden hose it looks like the oil is a little milky. What do i need to do to fix this problem? I just filled my outdrive oil. Everything is fixed except the oil problem.

Re: Merc 140 Problems

If your engine is raw water cooled, and you didn't drain the block, and it sat outside all winter, it probably froze and cracked the water jacket and is now allowing water into the crankcase. That would require a new engine to fix properly.
But, you need to block off all the water inlets and outlets and pressurize the engine cooling system and see if you can hear or see a leak.
