Merc 150 voltage regulator location?

I have a 1986 Mercury 150 XR2. A local dealer repaired the engine and removed
the voltage regulator from the engine. He told me it was malfunctioning and it was not necessary to replace it. I have been running the motor without it the last two years. My fishfinder has been having high voltage problems and I had small gauge wire under the center console burn-up. I figure before I fry the fishfinder or burn the boat, it might be a good idea to put it back on.

I purchased a voltage regulator (Quicksilver 88825a 7 1090 small voltage). Problem is, I can't figure out where to mount it. The old one was removed by the marina mechanic. I've checked a manual I bought for the engine. No
mention of the voltage regulator in it. Picked around the engine pulling a few things off looking for likely spots. It mounts with two screws. Two posts on it, one post red, other yellow. I'm a novice on
outboards, but, I am hopeful I can install it properly if I can just determine where it goes. It's about a month wait (out of the water) to have it done at the shop right now.

I am hoping somebody will be able to help me out with advice about installing it. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Merc 150 voltage regulator location?

Dogfish,
I looked up your motor in the repair and parts books and I can't find that it has a voltage regulator. I can find that it has a regulator which should be a 1½" square block with 2 mounting holes and 3 terminals. The CDI part #154-6770 is what I show for this part. There should be 2 yellow wires w/red stripes and one red wire to the terminals. The red wire connects to the terminal with the + markings. the other wire can go to either terminal. Most of them mount near the starter solenoid if that helps. Your mechanic may have connected one of the yellow/red wires to the battery side of the electrical system.

Good Luck
Capt Ron

Re: Merc 150 voltage regulator location?

Capt Ron

Thanks very much for looking up the info and providing me with such a detailed answer. It sounds like I might be holding the wrong part for my motor. My part is a 1 1/2 inch square block with two mounting holes and two, not three, terminals on it. I'm going to check to be sure I've got the right part and find the wires described in your message (and how they are attached). Much appreciated.

dog fish, that regulator mounted on top of the cylinder block, just aft of the rear flywheel cover mount.....used 2 #10 self tapping screws to hold it down...will definately help your problem...

ODDD1

Right where you said it would be. Mounts fine. Unfortunately, wiring will likely be more of a problem than I thought. I was hoping they would be easy to find. Mechanic did some serious wrapping and bundling of the wires when he removed it. Can you help me at all there? Is yellow wire connection yellow wire with a black stripe?

Re: Merc 150 voltage regulator location?

is easy dogfish....find the voltage rectifier on the ignition plate on the starboard side of the engine.......it is a 1.5" square with a red wire, a grey wire, and 2 yellow wires, all held on with nuts.....hook regulator red to rectifier red, hook regulator yellow to the rectifier post that has a single yellow only....an will work.
