I just picked up a beautiful 1985 tracker fs1800 with a 85 Merc 150 xr2 black max mounted to it. The issue is that it sat for at least three years, was told that it was winterized but the gas was never drained or any additives run threw it. I am able to start and let idle but under load it boggs out, The primer bulb is good, it starts really well but when inspecting the drain plugs on the carbs the brass was green and had a lot of build up on them. So I ordered 3 rebuild kits for each carb. My real question is once the carbs are rebuilt how do you go about syncing them to the motor and is their a rule of thumb on adjustments.

Thank you for any help

The rule is you buy a factory maintenance manual, and go through the coupla page linkage and timing adjustment routine in the book.

Replace all the internal hoses while you're at it, and when you have the carbs off, check all the bleed lines and bleed check valves. They all are important for decent running, especially idle.

It's a fine engine, and very strong and reliable, provided you don't try to push it when it's out of wack.

hope it helps

Thanks for the info. I have all ready ordered an OEM manual just waiting for it to come in at the marina. I went through all the hoses cleaned and replaced most of the lines and connecting points. So I hope the kits and the book to be here soon. Also is it safe to use a carb cleaner inside the float bowls to help remove build up and crudd. Just thinking that it might be a quick fix to get it up on the water. My mother never taught me patience is a vertu.

You can clean the carbs with carb cleaner. That's what it's for. Just don't spray any into the engine to start it.

If you go too fast and careless on this engine you will soon find that
1. Patience is a virtue
2. Impatience is expensive.

hope it helps
