I have bought a boat which has a 2000 Mercury 150hp XR6 2.5 liters. Motor was frozen due to water immersion. It wasn't running during accident, it was a storm damage. Removed heads, soaked cylinders with WD40 overnight, then sprayed a lot into intake, I mean I used 9 large cans, so there was a lot of it, after a little jiggling, it came loose, no pitting on cylinders. Cleaned carbs very throughly, started it on heavy oil (probably 5 to 1) mix. Motor started and ran fine, no noticeable noises (actually sounds really nice).
What will be the best way to clean it up inside, my main concern are all bearings. I can run it for few seconds (I am waiting for head water gaskets) but only with choke/primer pushed, then it quits. Looks like motor never finished break in, since there was mix into tank (I drained it).
I've got 130lbs compression even all 6 cylinders, after many readings, and always after I ran it for few seconds (I am doing this for past 3 days every 30 minutes, to let it cool off). Lower unit had no water intrusion, oil was very clean.

What do you think ? Is it going to be a running motor ? Is it worth taking a chance ?

Valv,

I'd be most concerned about sand/mud in the crankcase. If it's clean, you might be OK.

I'm also wondering why it won't run, without prime, after you went through the carbs?

These are mainly the 2 questions I was wondering too.

How do I "clean" crankcase ? I had reeds off and used a lot of lubricants, WD40, etc before starting it, I practically washed down all crankcase section, then blowed with a lot of air, sprayed again, etc.
I am concerned on lower main bearing, how do I "wash" it to remove possible sand ? Will hanging motor upside down help (I hope nobody drives in when I am doing this, I can see their face... )

I have no idea why it doesn't run without prime, I am waiting for a pump kit (coming with head gaskets), but even if I squeeze bulb have same problem. I might have to take carbs apart and re-check, they had a little corrosion/deposits on them, might have to tap into Ebay and find some carbs.
