merc 165 hydraulic valve lifters

I have suspicion that I have a stuck or clogged hydraulic lifter in my 165 hp Mercruiser I/O causing 'knock' according to what I have read.

The only problem is I cannot find anything to tell where to find them! I pulled the head off expecting them to be exposed but they are not.

Can anyone tell me how to get at them to inspect them?
