Merc 165 questions

I recently bought an older 28'cruiser. It has twin Merc inline 165s. I need to replace the sticking starboard starter. I believe it has two bolts holding it on the engine. I can remove one, but the other is firmly attached. I realize that it has been on for over 20 years and I just need to keep working on it, I just want to make sure it is the correct bolt. I can't see the bolt, only feel it. Does anyone have a picture or diagram of a starter for a 1974 Merc 165? I have the shop manual but it doesn't show the installed starter.

I also want to change the impellers for each engine. Once again the manual is lacking. The boat is in the water, so I really want to make sure I have the proper procedure.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Merc 165 questions

Not sure what to tell you on the starter, there are 2, 3/8" dia bolts that mount vertical that hold the starter on. One long one and a shorter one. There may also be a clip on the front of the starter bolting it to the block.

As far as the impeller goes, it's in the outdrive. Assuming you have outdrives.

Sounds like you need a Mercruiser manual. Check out the Merc web site.
