Hey folks, here is my problem, and what I believe (hope?) to be the solution, in case anyone comes about it.
I have a '77 Doral 19 footer with a Merc 165 and the MC1 drive.
Last year I had the following work done:
New bellows (all)
new impeller and housing
plugs
wires
fuel pump
new water separator installed (replaced old in-line filter)
carb kit
Boat ran like a dream all season.
This year, pull it out of storage, get it all cleaned up, start it on muffs, and temp seems a little warm. 170-180. Odd I thought, but risers, manifold block and head were only warm to touch.
So we take it out on the lake for its first run, temp starts to rise under load, almost to the top, around 230. Wayyy too hot thinks I.
Pull it out, take it home, engine bay is warm, but not hot, parts are hot, but I can hold them for a few secs.
Thermostat was never changed as far as I know, so I drop a new one in. Take it back out on the lake, does the same thing, 230 degrees.
Only thing left I can think of is the impeller is bad and either broke, or bent over. So in it goes to the shop (I don't have time to do an impeller at home)
I stopped by today and they said my impeller is still like new, and pumping a ton of water. They ran the boat up and the temp gauge did the same thing. So they lasered it and it was rock solid at 140-150. Bad temp sender.
generally a failed temp sending unit will read 0 or pegged to the top, this one is fishy. New sending unit being put in today, should be back in the water tomorrow.
