Merc 1981 25hp OB

My 1981 25 hp merc has sat for 5 years, I changed plugs, gas can, fuel lines, and filter. It will run but will "sputter" or almost "backfire" on idle and even higher RPM's, seems to spit out exaust around the back of carb when it does sputter. Any ideas as to what this could be? Wires? gasket? Please advise.

Yes. You need to remove the carbs and clean them out using carb cleaner and compressed air to blow out the passages. After 5 years, I'm sure they are clogged up with crud from old fuel. A rebuild kit would be a good idea also, as the inner parts may have suffered from neglect. Also, a decarb may not be a bad idea after sitting this long to make sure all the old carbon deposits are gone.
