Merc 1986 150 Max High Idle after Carbs cleaned

Syncronized carbs, but with water flusher on motor (150 - 1986 no oil injection), engine starts with 1/4 turn of key but runs to just under 2,000 RPM. Lower port idle screw totally off stop but still races at that RPM - I shut it down immediately. Carbs butterflies are in closed state. What do I do now - Totally confused???:%

are you sure you turned out the idle stop screw and not something else? Might be worth while to perform a lync and sync. to manual specs.

Can you try starting it up in a large garbage can full of water rather than the muffs? See what happens.
