My trim/tilt works sometimes, but when it doesn't the relays are clicking. Could there be a wiring problem or is the trim motor on the fritz. Also my starter is now engaging when you cut the battery switch on, so there must be a short in the ignition switch (quicksilver push to choke). Any help will be appreciated.

Start by making sure you have a fully charged battery. Then ohm out the trim switch, wiring, and solenoids, before suspecting the motor at all. The motor is the *last* componant in that food chain.

Also, I would *think* it's your ignition switch on the starter issue. UNLESS turning the key to ON also switches the +12v to the starter solenoid and the START portion of the switch grounds the ground side of the solenoid, then it could be a stray grounding issue. You could disconnect the START wire from the ignition switch and see if turning the switch to ON still causes the problem.

I'd reccomend you get the manual for your motor and study the wiring diagrams. then grab a volt/ohm meter and determine your electrics are doing what the wiring diagram says the outta.

-W

Thanks for the info. I have the manual, but it is vague about certian voltage readings in the trouble shooting. I will give it a try again and see what happens.

It's all pretty much straight 12v DC all the way.

If it's like my late 80's one, in the end game the fat blue one (solenoid to motor) should go hot for up, and green hot for down

-W

dobbslee,

I had a similar problem with my tilt motor. Solenoids were clicking.
I first checked battery voltage using my volt/ohm meter. Then checked the connections to the terminals on the solenoid, and also checked the terminals when hitting the tilt switch. This confirmed I had voltage coming OUT of the solenoid, 12 volts.
Then I used two jumper wires and connected them to the tilt motor, black, green, and blue. I don't know what color wires yours have but my two power wires are green and blue. Check them one at a time to +pos.

My problem was my motor. It didn't work when connected to the battery. After taking the motor off and then the end cap off the motor, this was confirmed.

Hope this helps. :)
