Merc 1994 40HP 4Cyl Tiller Pops Out Of Reverse When Warm. Also the starter motor will not engage when warm unless the shift lever is moved out of Neutral and partway towards the Reverse notch. When first used (cold) ignition and reverse gear work normally. 
Forward works just fine. The motor has NOT been run extensivly in reverse (never backtrolled), just routine launching, docking, etc. I bought it new in 94.<br />The motor has had no repairs or service (other than routine maintenance) since 1996, when a new lower unit was installed by a Merc dealer. <br />I have a Clymer manual but their troubleshooting does not cover this and the fish are biting.
