Merc 1994 40HP 4Cyl Tiller Pops Out Of Reverse When Warm. Also the starter motor will not engage when warm unless the shift lever is moved out of Neutral and partway towards the Reverse notch. When first used (cold) ignition and reverse gear work normally. Forward works just fine. The motor has NOT been run extensivly in reverse (never backtrolled), just routine launching, docking, etc. I bought it new in 94.
The motor has had no repairs or service (other than routine maintenance) since 1996, when a new lower unit was installed by a Merc dealer.
I have a Clymer manual but their troubleshooting does not cover this and the fish are biting.

Sounds like the shift rod is not adjusted quite right. Not sure how this is done on a tiller model, but the Clymers should cover a "shift rod linkage adjustment". It might be listed in the book after the section on re-installing the lower unit. This would be the cheapest ($0) thing to fix. This should take care of the "neutral saftey switch" also.

I have a 1996 mariner magnum same problem check your upper motor mounts with boat on trailer motor trimmed down take engine cover off and grab ahold of skeg and pull and push on lower unit from bow to stern and have someone watch what is going on up top you should get very little movement on netural switch and linkage the gas eats the rubber mounts over time mine were completly rotted away. Good Luck

Fish42 you hit the problem on the head. I have not torn it down to look at the bushings yet, but when I shift into reverse and give it the gas, I can see that the powerhead pushes forward enough that the shift lever is pushed back to neutral. I know I need to get into the bushings, but as a stop-gap measure, I adjusted the shift rod length and have had zero problems since.
Thanks for all your help!! :D
Brian
