Merc 200, 20hp tiller arm bracket removal?

Hi Guys, I'm replacing a broken tiller arm mounting bracket (Pt#68766A2) on a Merc 200, 20hp (1970's) and looking for the quickest way of doing it.

Looks like I have to remove the vertical shift shaft since it runs through a hole in the center of the arm where the arm mounts. The manual doesn't show instructions of the removal of this shaft. Do any of you guys know how it comes out? Can I just pull it straight when all parts are clear above it or is there something I have to disconnect lower in the saddle assembly?

Any help or guidance in steps would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the bracket is studded in place, not bolted. That said, you'll have to remove the powerhead and lower pan, in addition to the upper shift rod and related attachments...

Thanks for the quick reply Scott.

I'm not sure but it looks like there might be enough room to squeeze the arm out from under the lower pan once I get the upper shift rod out. The arm IS attached with nuts. I can get at two of the three holding it and looks like the third would be accessable once the shift rod has been removed.

I have found out the shift rod WON'T just pull straight up. So, I guess I'll start removing parts till I find out whats holding it in place lower down.

Cheers

Hi Guys just wanted to update this post in case someone else has to replace the upper shift shaft or tiller bracket.

Chinewalker is correct. The powerhead does have to come off. The upper shift shaft then will pull straight up. Once it is out of the way the lower pan will come off letting you get at the tiller hold down nuts. Seemed like a big job but took just over an hour to complete.

Thanks again guys.

Cheers
