new poster, maybe too late for help. anyone ever heard of stator? (sp) not being lock-tighted down? mechanic telling me that flywheel got chewed up from above cause. 950$ in parts flywheel, stator, plastic flywheel coever(?) would stator failure cause tilt/trim motor to fail at same time. its a 1997, that's new to me but it appears to have been babied. i was running about 4000 rpm. never showed any other signs of trouble. tahnks in advance, g.

Gebby, That problem could happen, but I would ask to see damaged parts. If that stator did come loose, that flywheel would chew it up if it became intwined. As for the plastic cover, unless the flywheel let go, I do not see any way to damage......Goodluck....BushCat

I have a friend has a 1990 90hp Merc and has had the same problem about 2 years ago. And the stator was the problem. cost about the same to fix it but minus the platic cover.<br />Good Luck
