I have a 2001 Mercury 200EFI. I tried starting it today and the starter motor gear rotates, but does not engage the flywheel. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

I'm no expert but it sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck. You could try freeing it up or maybe it needs replacing. Sorry I can't be of more help, but something to look at.
Lucky

Re: Merc 200EFI Starter Trouble

Probably low voltage to the starter is the most likely cause. Check both pos and negative terminations (tight, clean) and you could also spray some WD40, etc. on the shaft the gear rides on. Battery should also be checked for full charge.

You can verify if it's the solenoid by jumpering the solenoid (motor will turn over or at least try - have the ignition sw in the "OFF" position).

Thanks for the advice. I'll try everything this next week.
