Hi everyone

Early this year I bought a used 1994 Merc 200hp. I installed it on a grady and did some tests at home. RPM would go to 8000 on the tach but I thought it was a bad gauge.

I took the boat out and after about an hour one of the regulators (it has 2) literally melted. I mean black ooze came out of it. I removed it (rpms went normal) and came back home on the other one.

I bought and installed one regulator and now the rpms are reading true (cool).

But, I hate buts:

The voltage is steady at 14 at idle and at 2000 it goes up to 14.5 and keeps rising with rpms up to like 15.

I removed the old regultor (the one I came back with) and tested with one a neighbor gave me. Same thing.

Is this voltage normal?

Can something else have burned?

I used a digital multimeter.

Thanks

Try a different battery see if you get the same results.

Also check for loose wires.

TMD

Voltage should stabilize at approximately 14.5 volts at 1000 rpms, with an analog voltmeter. I would clean all charging systems grounds, and recheck. I would think if not over 15 volts is ok. Manual says 16 volts and over is too high.

I have the same engine. My mechanic said I should replace both regulaters at once? Is there any reason for that? I think there like 139 each$. Mine is oozing too.
