Merc 25E, can I make a genny work on this thing?

wondering if I can wire this thing to make it recharge batteries like the newer models. can this be doen by adding a generator? tis a '56 MercElectric ser #967282 I have a Cornflake Degree in engineering, hehe if that helps.
