I hope someone here can help? I have a 1984 SeaRay and when decreasing throttle after running wide open for a while my engine stalls, and will not restart for about 20 minutes, heavy gas vapor smell is present also. I am thinking it is flooding out. any suggestions or comments?

Re: Merc 260 Carb Flodding Out

well it is like this, i was out today, first time i was running for about 30 minutes wide open, slowed down to begin trolling and the carb just choked and sputtered then died, I pulled a plug it was fine not wet at all. heavy gas smell in engine compartment. It started about 30 minutes after stall. Upon returning to the harbor same thing as above. Temp was low about 1/4 of the gauge. I do believe it was happening just as the bow was coming down. hope this helps and thanks for your help.

30 MINUTES at WOT ??????

That's about 29 + 1/2 minutes Longer than I'd ever run my motor at WOT......

Carb float levels should be checked....
Fuel pump maybe ???
The Smell of gas gets me...????

yes, sounds like a float problem. Could have a hole in it if hollow, or soaking up gas which would make it heavy and sink.

was on river this weekend. boat started and ran fine until i shut it off. would not start, heavy gas smell. pulled spark arrester, gas dripping onto butterflys. opened throttle, hit starter, gas poured out of float chamber vent tube and venturis. got towed back to dock. pulled carb, found hole in brass float & float full of gas. now, where did that dang 1/8 inch hole come from?

say bondo,.. why would you not run your motor wide open?

Because I want it to Last....
It'll run Longer, more Efficiently, at 3000/3500rpms, than at 4600rpms....
I've got 550hrs on it in the last 3 years... I Plan to see 2500hrs before I rebuild again....

WOT in Bursts is Fine, But for 30 minutes, is Rediculous....
Would you drive your car at WOT for 30 minutes....

So long as i keep sellin' parts, I hope everyone keeps runnin' at WOT!

Will that be Mastercard, Visa, or Discover?

As for the hole, your carb has probably had water (corrosion)in it at some point in time. Is the bowl smooth or pock marked inside? This makes a great case for annual water/fuel seperating filter changes.
