Bummer, picked off
Since you were out working on your boat, me and the guys were kinda drinkin' and carrin' on for a bit, had a lot of fun with your post though, sorry.
It is kind of different though, fun breaks out on a forum instead of a fight....... :D

Re: Merc 3.0 engine/drive alignment question

Just to bring things back to a semblence of sanity... ;) :p . While it is true that the back mounts are simply torqued down and have no real adjustment per se, I had trouble aligning my v-8 Mercruiser the last time I removed the engine. It wasn't until I loosened the rear mounting bolts that I was able to insert the alignment tool. THEN I could tighten them down and everything aligned nicely. I realize the front aligns differently for a v-8 than a straight four, but there is a little play or "give" that is possible at the rear mounts that can give a headache trying to line things up. You'll find a little misalignment will cause the tool not to go into the hub.

If you have to loosen the rear mounts to get the alignment bar in, then something is wrong with the mounts or the hardware under them. You should NEVER have to loosen rear mounts when everything was ok.

Re: Merc 3.0 engine/drive alignment question

The mounts / engine, etc are only a year old. All new hardware. We worked for a couple of hours trying to get this aligned. (It is a 2003 Mercruiser 5.7 liter crate engine). The drive is an Alpha 1. The reason I pulled the engine was because I had my transom rebuilt and I purchased a used (like new) transom assembly from a fresh water boat. (Much better than the "good" used salt water ones I could find locally). Anyway, as I mentioned, all it took was a loosening of the rear bolts, a "shake" of the engine and then I was able to tighten things back up and the bar slid right in. Maybe not common, and maybe it was sitting down correctly before, (I think it was), but that was my experience. I figured it may help someone else. ;)
