I just got a 1986 Cheetah last week and got it running this week I can hear a nasty pounding in the bottom end and the pvc is just blowing oil out. So I figure its do for a rebuild or a new motor one I was just wondering if anyone knows what all motors will match up with the out drive from a 1986 mercruiser 140.

Thanks

Josh

Let me know if more information is needed

Ayuh,.... Pretty much any of the 2.5l 120hp, or the 3.0l 140hp motors will bolt up...
Depending on vintages, ya might need some parts off yer motor....

^^^ Yup

Before you ask, the 140HP/3.0L was never used in cars/trucks as it's an marine/industrial engine, the 120HP/2.5L is a car engine from the 60's. Sooo, you are not going to find one out of the car wreckin' yard.

Re: merc 3.0 motor swap

Thought about the car motor swap and desided I didnt trust a old car motor to run at that high of rpms for the length of time my boat does. I was wanting to go with a newer fuel injected motor if I have to go through with the swap. On further investigation I believe the person that tryed to get it running prior to me put the wrong oil in there is a bottle of non detergent type 30 wt Im going to try and put the 25/50 in it calls for and see if it makes a differance or if its to late.

Thanks for the imput

Ayuh,... I kinda doubt the odds are in yer favor,...
Substitute the word "Oil" for the word "Grease" in my signature,...

Find yerself another 3.0l motor, or rebuild yer's over winter,...

30wt oil won't hurt it, that's what my old 140HP (3.0l) was speced for under normal conditions.

I have to belelieve your right about needing to find a new one or getting it redone. So heres the question what is the average price for a rebuild I know I get what I pay for but I also no some of the local marinas like to charge a little high I have no problem paying to get the job done right but dont like being taken
