I am curious, what is the max RPM and max speed that one could reasonably expect out of a 3.0 Merc? I realize every boat is different, but I just want something to compare mine to. I got it running a little better and have seen max RPM at around 3800 and max speed (according to speedo) at around 34-35mph.

Re: Merc 3.0 performance?

If the tach is right, you are 400 - 800 RPM low . . . this could be due to a host of issues.

1) Tach accuracy
2) Engine condition
3) Boat Bottom condition
4) Waterlogged flotation foam
5) Prop pitch or condition

She's probably not gonna run much more than 40, but all of that stuff needs to be right ;)

Re: Merc 3.0 performance?

I have a 91 bayliner capri with the 3.0 stern drive.
Max rpm's on my tach are about 4200-4300 WOT.
I can max out dependably at 38mph. If all the right conditions are met, I have perfect water, proper trim, and just myself and one passenger in the boat I have reached 42 mph once.

You could try different prop configuration but you are prob close to as good as you are going to get with a 3.0 merc.
