Need a little help. I have a 2001 1950 Bayliner Capri Classic. (MerCruiser 3.0)The boat runs great except for the occassional stall. The stall happens after running 3/4 throttle or so for about 20 minutes give or take....it just dies. There is no warning...running great then absolutely nothing....just dead in the water (there is not sputtering)..It will start with a few key turns. If you need more information please ask. Thanks for your assistance.

Devon

Alot of possibilites here so some detective work will help us help you.A bad keyswitch comes first to mind as Bayliner is known to use cheap components.Check voltage at the purple wire at the switch with it on during the failure. That will get you started and I 'm sure more suggestions are coming.

Re: Merc 3.0 Stalling at 3/4 throttle

To get it back started it takes a few key turns and it starts back up....sometimes needing a open throttle. I am torn between it being a fuel or electrical problem. I am leaning towards an electrical issue as it doesn't stutter before cutting out...it just goes dead.

After looking over the fuel line, plugs, ect. I ran across something. The wire that runs from distributor to the coil assembly had something strange. The connector going to the coil assembly was all fill with a grease like substance. Is that supposed to be there or could that be my problem. As it runs at high rpm and heats up the gunk causes it to "short" out momentarily?

Thanks for the imput.....

Devon

Hey D if the grease is clear then its di-electric grease That would be O.K, But if its dirty color then you need to replace the coil.

The grease is not clear....so do I have to replace the coil or just clean the wire...

Devon
