OK.. I'm posting this for one my boat neighbors. He has a '96 (I think) SeaRay 270. 4.3 litre Mercs. His port side stalls when shifting into gear. His father "leaned out" the carb, but that did not help.

He has owned the boat for 4 years, and has never done anything other than oil changes. I suggested checking the fuel filters, but..

I don't know anything about mercs, so I'm posting here..

Also, the engine will rev up in nuteral, the idle is set at 900rpm, and the engine sounds, and seems to run good. He does sometime get it in with it stalling, and the engine runs fine at that point.

Any suggestions??

Sounds like the shift cutout switch may be killing the engine due to improper adjustment or stiff shift cable. Click here for more information.

Lower Shift Cable is Frozen.........
It Needs to be Replaced......
It's Also Idling Too High.........
Should be down around 700/750rpms......
