Merc 40 Stator

I have a 40hp merc, serial # 7161785 made in Mississauga Ont Canada, rope start, short shaft, 2 cl. I can't find the year of the engine from the links here, the problem is the engine will not start or start intermitently, have had 3 shops look at it, first one cleaned the carbs but couldn,t pull it to start it so that was a waste of $250, another shop checked all the electrical and said that he reset the mercury switch (blue thing on side of motor) after that the engine ran intermitently, that was another $250, 3rd shop tells me the stator is gone and the part is not avalible. Any help would be apreciated, I'm willing to try the stator if the parts are avalible.

Year is 1980/81...

Before throwing parts at it, get some diagnostics done. If the mechanic thinks it's the stator, get him to PROVE it... Show it has weak or no output... (He should be using a DVA meter.)

And the part is available. Not from Mercury, but right here, from iBoats...
(Don't worry about the serial numbers, they are for US built engines.)
