This is probably a silly question, but just what the heck is the differance between a 40 and 50 2-stroke mercury? The specs in the catalogs are identical. I have a 2000 40 hp, and when I asked a mechanic this winter, he was vague, and basically told me to buy a 50. Well now, I can't do that, and I might not really want to, but if the weight is identical, and the crank and pistons are the same, what is making the engine more powerful? Thanks.

Probably something to do with the carb or reeds.

Along with port timming and other little subtle differences. If you want a 50, then buy a 50. You will save a lot of time AND a lot of money.

Craig
