MERC 40 Wiring Problem

I have a 1983 MERC 40, 2 cycle, serial # 5992441 outboard.<br />The wiring cracked. I think it shorted and caught fire.<br />I purchased a new wiring harness and installed it on the motor.<br />The starter works, and per an instruction book, the stator test and the trigger assembly test appear to be ok.<br />However, on the coil the black wire is positive and the green wire and green/white wire are negative. The switch box is labeled with the wire color so it is wired correctly.<br />Would anyone have any suggestions?
