merc 454 mag???

hello everyone i am looking for your opinions on the merc 454 mag engine.what are your thoughts on longevity and economic`s of this engine compared to the 496 mag?the motor is in a 95 powerquest 29ft.they dont seem as common as the 7.4 ,502,or the 496.should i stay away from this engine?

Ayuh,... The 7.4l, 'n the 454 are the Same motor...
The Magnum is alittle beefier, 'n abit more Horsepower...
It's a Good solid motor...

If you were buying new, they are good motors. problem is, if you are buying used, you are dependent on how the previous owners took care of it. Lack of maintenance kills more marine engines than anything else.

don what are the Lack of maintenance areas that most people dont keep up with that cause damage to these engines?

All or any of the normal maintenance items, not only with the engine, but the drive and everything else.
Maintenance items like raw water pump impellers, oil changes, tuneups, winterizing, fuel filters, you name it.

guys i am deff looking atb aused boat.what hours should i try and stay under to get some good life from a big block motor?should i look for a 496 mag,496 mag ho and stay away from the 454 mag?

It's Nothing to base the boat buying decision on....
