Hi all,

I was just wondering if my Merc classic fifty 45hp (1987) is capable of charging my starting battery (or even 2 batteries?) The serial number is A725146. I've got the shop manual on order, but I figured you guys (and gals) would probably be able to give me a faster answer.

Thanks in advance,
Tim

If it is electric start, it has all the components to charge a battery. It WILL NOT charge 2 batteries, unless you have a switch, to change batteries. If you try, without the switch, it will burn up the rectifier, and possibly the stator.

Thanks! It is a electric start, but I am not sure if it is hooked up to charge the Starting battery as it is now.. Is there anyway I can check to see if it is charging?

Thanks!
Tim

I guess you could use a device like what the auto parts store uses to test alternators.

I never worry about it until the battery goes dead. :D

the manual will give you details how to test the
voltage going from the rectifier to the battery.
new rectifier is about $40.
good luck,
M.Y.
