Good afternoon fellas,

So, in continuation with my overhaul of the Checkmate... I'm starting to wonder what the PO has done to this boat?

Does anyone know if the Merc. 470 would have come with the Mercruiser 140 outdrive?

I ask this because I am planning on going through this outdrive(new boots, seals, cable, etc...) but if this is "too much motor" for the 140 outdrive, I might consider simply looking for an Alpha or Bravo to take its place....

Thanks...and Merry Christmas!!!

Ayuh,... Yer drive is already pretty much an Alpha drive...
The 140 will have 1.98:1 gears, 'n the 470 usually uses 1.84:1, so you might make up the difference with a prop change...
It depends on which pitch was started with...

170 horses is about right, not 470 horses. It`s a inline 4 cylinder with FWC

The little label on the drive that says '140' is just that, a label. The drive is exactly the same but with a different ratio, as Bond-o said. Those drives are good to about 300hp... If you have the serial number (of the drive) we can tell you if it's an MC-1, R, MR, or Alpha One....

I think the Mercruiser 1 outdrive used on the 470 won't fit other engines--and vice versa.

As previously mentioned, the gear ratio speaks--1.84:1.

I have an extra out drive and stainless prop.

Bama,

I plan on keeping the 470, as it's a perfect motor for this boat...

Is your outdrive/prop. avilable on the "open market"...?
If so, I might be interested...

Thanks, again...

Achris,

That's the one thing I wasn't clear about... The sticker, I thought, was the max. horse designation. A lot of the newer ones have a 3.0, 5.7, etc... So, I wasn't sure.

My outdrive is a MC-1. I do have the Merc. book/manual, etc...

As for the horsepower, that should cover my 170 horses...LOL

Thanks !

Yes it will... It's the same drive.... With a slightly taller ratio. If you were running a 17" on the original (1.84:1) then you'll need a 18" with the drive from the 140. As they don't make an 18" prop for those drives any more, then if you were nearer the bottom end of the recommended revs, stay with the 17". If it was topping out near the top, move to a 19"....

The sticker is just an engine descriptor. They had a spare space on the drive and just had to put something there, so they put the engine size. When a dealer received a new drive for installation it came with a small sheet of engine size stickers. He took the correct one off the sheet and stuck it on the back of the drive. Originally it was the horsepower of the engine and later the capacity, now they don't put anything there.... Go figure.

But all the drives are the same apart from the tooth count in the upper housing (which give you the different ratios). On the earlier drives the yoke was a different length between the in-lines and the V8s, but that's it.... And they are all good to about 300hp. Much more than that and they tend to turn into scrap metal. :D

Chris..........

Makes sense... It's a good thing I'm not so bored or daring to put a 300+hp motor in this boat...
The hull manufacturer calls for 150hp max( I do believe).

I'm sort of on standby with my project, got a baby girl on the way(any day now)!

Your input is much appreciated!
