Merc 470 Carb Q

In my merc 470 we have the 4 bbl rochester carb, with the alum manifold for it.

My Q is about changing the carb... I would really LOVE to put the 4bbl marine edelbrock carb if its interchangable... Would this carb fit? Or would any non merc or rochester 4bbl carb go on this engine?

why not just go back to a 2 bbl and use a mercarb or rochester? you'll save gas and prob wont notice any performance difference. i think the 4 bbl 3.7 is only rated at 20hp more. not worth it with price of gas IMO

Re: Merc 470 Carb Q

I have 2 engines both with the 4 bbl carb setup, going back to a 2 bbl is not an option at the moment.
But i would really like to know if there is anyone who can suggest a perfomance 4 bbl carb that can be used on this manifold.

The Rochester Quadrajet has smaller primary bores than the Rochester 2G (Two Jet) and will give better performance and use less gas. The Q-jet is rated at 750-800 cfm.

Wow i had no idea, so the quadrajet is actually more gas efficient then the 2bbl??? Thats a shocker.
I am still wondering if i can put an edelbrock 1409 or similar on this manifold....

I was searching through edelbrocks website.. MAN they have an awesome head for this engine!! It only costs a mere $1.2k...

How awesome would this be on a merc 470... I would not spend the money, im just day dreaming.

Speaking of performance: Have you ever been impressed with the pulling power of a Mercruiser 3.0 inboard outboard?

I always thought it'd be great to have a nitreous kit installed on inboard outboard engines just to get them on plane. The smaller engines run okay once up to speed, but it's just getting started that's tough.

You wouldn't have to buy larger engines, and fuel usage on the smaller motors would be great.

LOL.. Ok i think this thread has somewhat deviated from the original question...

A big reason i ask the original question is because, i may have one carb which is not even rebuildable anymore... at core... So an edelbrock 4bbl is actually less expensive then an older rocherster quadrajet...
Just trying to figure out all my options before hand.
