Hi, I'm new here. I was just wondering if anyone knows of, or has used, a sealant/electrical compound on their coil to distributor wire??? (on the coil side) Mine had some stuff in it that was like a putty or gasket maker. I didn't understand why.....? But I after cleaning it out and completing the installation of my plugs and wires, I went to plug the coil wire in (the last wire and I was finished!!!) AND.....I wasn't satisfied with the feel of it. The wire seemed as if it would EASILY work its way loose, loosing the connection. And worse.....causing a possible arc in the process of doing so!!! So, I cannot find any info on this. Can anyone relate to this?? And what did you do to resolve it?? Thank you very much!

You need to "tighten" the contact inside the boot - or replace the wire.

I use dielectric grease on justabout everything to fight corrosion.

It must have been "Electron Stop leak".

Do you mean by "tighten", spread the metal contact out so it will make a better/tighter contact with the coil?? If so, I tried it and didn't like it. I think with the dielectric grease on there it seem to want to possibly slide loose...at least eventually it might. I didn't like that. Thank you for you response.

Zip-tie the boot to the coil tower.

Thanks. I thought about using a hose clamp, but wanted to see what others have done.

Ayuh,... If it's a New wire,+ the Right boot on it...
You should be able to spread the metal clip on the end of the wire slightly, insert it securely, grease the end of the neck of the coil tower, then slide the boot down into place,...
Securely....

You don't have it end for end do you, with the distributer boot on the coil,+ vice-versa,..??

Don't put a SSteel hose clamp on it.... It Don't need to be That Secure...
The wire kinda "Clicks" in,+ the boot kinda Slides down the wire... It Ain't goin' nowhere....

If the boot won't stay on the cap, it's wrong boot, wrong wire set or something. The proper part fit nicely and stay put.

Well, the wire is new, its shows that the Sierra # is for my application. So I assume the wires are right. The boot style is the same as the Merc wires that were on it, which had that sealant on it. I am NOT 100% sure its on correct, but the boots on the distributer should all be the same style....right? The one on the coil is a little different. (Its not as rigid, and also does not have the same connector on the end. The distributor end of the coil wire snaps to the cap, and the coil end presses into the coil and actually not a female to male type connection....right??? I'm pretty sure I have it right. I'm not a boat mechanic, but have a good understanding of how things work). Thanks everyone! I'll check again after work in the morning to see what else I can figure out. I'm a beleiver that you shouldn't have to clamp or tie ANYTHING. Something isn't right if you have to do that. Thanks!!

Re: Merc 5.0 Ignition Coil Sealant??

I have been in your shoes in the past with this same issue, The problem will be in the boot it's self, My guess is because it's an after market spark plug set.

Does your old boot still fit good?

If so you could try switching the boot to the new wire, Or I will be honest, either buy new OEM wires from mercruiser or just keep using the old wire if it still worked good.

If not then make sure you keep the old wire in the boat so you can get home.

Or another option is take your coil with you to a store like napa, ect and try to find a new boot that will fit tight. Good luck, I know your pain.:(

Mercruiser uses INSULATING COMPOUND part number 92- 41669 1
On the coil tower from the factory
I think I?ve seem it mentioned in the service manuals

Thanks guys. I did see somewhere where Quicksilver made some electrical compound for that. I'll look into getting some from somewhere. I couldn't find where I could buy any though. And.....the original Mercruiser wire was stuck in the coil with that stuff. The boot looks the same. Thanks!

Is the use of this insulating compound a must? If so, is there a substiture that is available locally? What is the exact purpose of this compound? Is it to secure the boot to the coil tower or an electrical sealant to keep moisture out, etc.? If there is a substitute I'll try it. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
