Merc 5.7 max 3000 rpm after valve job, stuck at lake for the week

' 94 5.7 Merc, 4 barrel carb, alpha 1. My buddy just had his heads done because of low compression. Just got the boat back and had no time to test it before driving 400 miles to the lake were we have a work meeting with the National Parks Service at Lake Powell. Now we are here at the lake and it runs rough and we only get 3000 rpm max. No blow by so the rings didn't give out with the increased compression. Could it be timing? Oh I am doing this from my smart phone so please excuse any typos.

Probably adjusted the valves too tight.
Or it could be the timing is way off, or the plug wires are crossed, or there is a vacuum leak, or ........................

In other words, you are going to have to go back and check everything that was done.

I will check what I can. did not think of vacuum leak. If all else fails we sit and jig for fish and stay close to the marina until we can head back to the marine shop at the end of the week.
