hi, i'm considering buying a VERY cheap 1996 21' maxum w/ a seized engine. it has a mercruiser 5.7L engine that appearantly seized due to a poor winterizing job?!? ( according to the marina) i was wondering what a ball park estimate would be to have this engine rebuilt assuming manifolds and exhaust are ok. i know a brand new engine would cost me around 7grand, but thats a bit of my budget. i'd appreciate any info or advice.

Shop around, ebay, michigan motors, Rapid-O-Marine any of them should be able to get you a reman for half of that. One thing you will need to know is whether or not you have a vortec engine. Don't trust the valve covers, stickers, lables etc, they all say vortec. All you need to do is count the bolts that attach the intake manifold to the heads. If you have 4 on each side(total of 8 ) you have the Vortec heads. If you have 6 on each side(total of 12) then you have conventional heads.

I have fixed a lot of locked and flood engines. It is not such a big deal.
Here is standard job for flood:
connecting rod, rings, bearings, gasket set, head rebuilding.
Parts are very cheap.
Sometimes alum piston is "welded" to cylinder wall, knock it out, remove alum pieces from cyl wall, hone, install new piston and rings.

i just had to replace my 5.7 merc- do not buy a new barr motor from mich motors!!!!- problems w/ wiring ect...- stick to rebuilding your merc and use all old parts except exhaust manifolds. a lot cheaper and less headaches.

www.rapidomarine.com could ship you a remanufactured 5.7 longblock for your year for $1600. Then, you'd have to swap all of your external parts to the new longblock. There are a lot of parts that need swapping, and you'd have to remove the engine from the boat.
