my merc 50 blueband wont idle it only starts with the choke on (hot or cold) and thats with the warm up leaver up. when its running if you put the leaver down it will die, if you try to put it up before it dies it wont pick up just will just stop, the boat goes well up top end it will pull the side off a tug boat, and spends most of its time out of the water, just this stupid problem, im sure its not a fuel blockage coz it goes good up top, do they have idle jets? i have stored it a few times without running it out of fuel, but the problem has been there since i got it. i do run it out of fuel now, the plugs are good and i use new fuel all the time.

Re: merc 50 blue band wont idle

I had the same problem with my Merc 850. Stalled all the time but take it on open water, keep it running long enough to get to full throttle and zoooooommmmmmm off we went....

I took it to the mechanic, had it tuned, carbs rebuilt, etc. and now it runs like a champ. The only issue now is it takes a few cranks to get it started up but once it's going it purrs...

NM-Sounds like your idle jets are patially clogged. Time to rebuild the carb(s). Besure and soak them in a good carb cleaner over night and remove all rubber and plastic before soaking. Also suggest replacing needle and seats.
