My mechanic, who had determined that the coils and power pack on my Merc three cyl. 50hp engine are good.(motor 1980s model) He doesn't know why it cross fies and suspects it may be the magnets in the fly wheel. If I buy a new fly whee, I will be stuck with it if that is not the problem. He thinks the magnets may be out of alignment, and ccan't fix them 'till he gets a like fly wheel to try on my engine. He can then re align the magnets. The engine will run on all three and then two, and from two to one and then three cyl. Very frustrating. Any suggestions, or help will be appeciated. The Merc is on a 24ft Pontoon boat.
Captain Charlie
charlie832@earthlink.net

Re: MERC 50 CROSS FIRING

How was it determined that the coils and powerpack are ok? DVA test or Swapped them out.

Your problem could also be the trigger under the flywheel.

I cannot see magnets causing the problem as it would do it all the time.

It cannot be the stator as you cannot lose only 1 cyl with a bad stator.

When the problem arrises have him check for reference voltage from the Trigger...and work from there. It should not be that hard to diagnose.

TMD
