Hi all,

I have a new 08 merc 4 stroke on a open bass type boat in australia.
The motor has 43 hrs from new(5 months). it has developed a squeal type noise simular to a loose car fan belt. it only happens under a light load from about 1000 rpm to around 2500 rpm. the noise is gone once up on the plane and at idle.
Have always and always will be a loyal merc fan but am getting concerned about this motor having owned 4 mercs previously.
It is at the dealer at the moment and was wondering if anyone has an idea what may be wrong.
Am planning on a week long trip starting in 5 days and am nervous.

would really appreciate any input
thanks

Re: Merc 50 hp efi problem

I had a similar noise in my 2005 model 50, it was a broken plastic connection between the driveshaft and the gearbox (it is supposed to break if you hit anything so as to save the motor).

The good news is that you are well and truly covered by warranty and there are plenty of merc dealers to go to (where are you?).

If it makes the noise under light load, they will be able to duplicate it in the workshop. Don't worry.

Hi,

Went down to see what was going on and he has found milky oil in the gearbox??? or something like that, when he talks motor jargon i glaze over as i don't understand what the hell he is saying:p
He was able to duplicate the noise in the shop.:)

You are spot on for sure and thanks for the reply.

I'm based in shepparton and the boat is being looked at by ben at shepp marine, he is a guru.....wished he sold quintrex's as i wanted to buy from him, he is so good at what he does.

thanks

I'm in Melbourne but I use Eildon outboards for servicing. If you decide on a second opinion, Tony Cadell at Eildon outboards lives and breaths these motors (and he is a nice guy to deal with).

Sounds as though Shepp marine will have you up and running in no time.
