I have an 86 or 87 model merc classic 50 sn 0B170676. It has surface gap plugs in it right now. I was wondering if these are good for what i am doing . Basically running motor for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, most of my day on the water is spent fishing. I would like to know what NKG or Champion plugs to put in and the gap. Its gettting hard to start at times and i thought new plugs couldnt hurt. Thanks.

Re: Merc 50 hp spark plugs

My advise is that like any motor, your motor should have a special heat range, and gap settings. Most spark plugs you buy that fit your engine, the manufacturers already set the gaps for you. I'm a mechanic on cars, and very seldome I run accross sparkplugs that needs the gap reset. and if you just run it short periods of time, hotter heat ranges shouldnt hurt.
Chances are, When you buy plugs that fit your engine now days, the gaps already set.
Hope this helped.

That motor calls for L76v per Mercury. That is a surface gap plug, do not put regular plugs in that motor. Use only what Merc calls for.
